Coronavirus: Fact Vs. Fiction

Rent It Network - Thursday, March 5, 2020

The coronavirus is being labeled a global pandemic as countries are taking precautions to limit travel and isolate the effected. Mass panic continues to spread as the death toll grows higher. The corona virus was first discovered in 2003, as a strand of the Sars and Mers viruses, and has resurfaced in multiple forms over the last three decades. Recently, a new strand of the virus has surfaced and has resulted in tremendous fatalities as the death toll reaches 30,000 and the amount of reported infections approach 90,000 worldwide. Since reports of the outbreak have surfaced in China in Late January 2020, rumors have begun to circulate across the internet as the virus has spread to three dozen countries and most recently into the United States in Florida, New Hampshire and Washington State. The following conspiracies have been addressed by members of the Center of Disease Control (CDC) to ease fear and aid prevention of the virus.

1. Wearing a mask can prevent you from catching the virus: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases. Experts are also warning that putting on a face mask without proper fitting and training could actually increase your risk.

2. This virus can travel on packages shipped from oversees: Medical experts at the CDC say, “the Coronavirus can only survive on inanimate objects for a few hours, maybe a day or two in perfect laboratory conditions.”  The time it would take to get here would be plenty of time for the virus to lose its potential. Like most viruses, corona bacterium requires conditions present in humans such as body temperature and blood cells to thrive.

3. Coronavirus was intentionally given to the population: Many rumors have circulated that this virus was designed as a man-made bioweapon, designed to regulate population control. Scientists have globally dismissed and denied these claims as they search for the real cause of the outbreak. It is currently believed to have been generated from bats and later spread to hosts, by making contact with infected surfaces; in a contraction method similar, to other strands of the virus like Sars.
